Mariners (ss) 8, Diamondbacks 5
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) --With less than two weeks left in spring training, Jarrod Washburn can't wait for the games to count. The left-hander allowed one run in 4 2-3 innings during his latest tuneup, helping a Seattle Mariners split squad beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-5 on Monday.

Washburn yielded four hits before he was pulled with a runner on third base. He threw 85 pitches. Seattle manager Mike Hargrove wants his starters to be able to throw 100 by opening day. Washburn was supposed to be on a 75-pitch limit, but he reached that in the fourth inning. So Hargrove sent him out for the fifth. "Sure, I could have gone more, but there's no reason to push it," said Washburn, who had one of the worst seasons of his 10-year career in 2006, going 8-14 with a 4.67 ERA in his Seattle debut. "Look, I'm not a fan of spring training. I like to play in games that count." He next chance will probably be April 3 against Oakland. Washburn is currently slotted second in Seattle's rotation behind Felix Hernandez. The other three members of the unit are new. In four starts covering 13 2-3 innings this month, Washburn has allowed only three earned runs (a 1.98 ERA) and 10 hits. Richie Sexson and Jose Guillen led Seattle's offense with two RBIs each. Guillen, acquired from Washington to be the new right fielder and add power, pulled his second home run of the spring over the left-field fence in the second inning off Doug Davis. Davis allowed 10 hits and six runs in four innings. "He was not getting the inside part of the plate, and that hurt him," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "As a result, he put the ball over and you saw what happened." In three starts this month, Davis has allowed 15 hits and 10 runs over eight innings. "Sure, he's upset, but he was still competing and getting in his work," Melvin said. "He just wants better results." Brandon Morrow, the fifth overall pick in last June's draft, had another impressive day for Seattle. The 22-year-old former California star pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings. He struck out two and walked one. The right-hander has not allowed a run this spring, giving up just two hits in 6 1-3 innings with two walks and eight strikeouts. "He's making us think about him," Hargrove said. The Mariners had expected Morrow to open the season at Double-A, if that high. Notes:@ LHP George Sherrill is losing ground to veteran Arthur Rhodes for the job of Seattle's primary left-handed setup man. Sherrill allowed his second three-run homer in the past eight days, to Steve Garrabrants in the seventh inning. "George had another rough outing, and yes, there's some concern," Hargrove said. ... The 15 hits matched a spring training best for Seattle. ... The teams play again Tuesday in Tucson. The Diamondbacks' Edgar Gonzalez will start against former Arizona pitcher Miguel Batista.
